The April 4th, 2023 Wisconsin election will include two ballot questions that would change the way bail decisions are made in our courts by amending our state Constitution. Though there is complexity in this initiative, we believe these changes will increase inequity and racial disparities in the criminal legal system.
The Court Observers held an informational event on Thursday 3/9/2023 to share what they have learned about the referendum questions and what they have seen in recent bail hearings that cause concern. Anthony Cooper, Nehemiah’s Vice President for Strategic Partnerships & Reentry Services, also joined the info session to share his perspective.
