Emerging Excellence exists to cultivate Black-centered spaces where identity, healing, leadership, and joy are not only welcomed but intentionally developed. Our vision is rooted in serving Black youth and young adults in the Greater Madison Area who are navigating critical seasons of formation yet are often overlooked by traditional systems of support. These programs are designed with precision, recognizing that each group faces distinct challenges that require tailored, affirming, and relationship-driven approaches.
We envision Emerging Excellence as a direct counter to the systemic barriers that continue to shape outcomes for Black communities in education, health, and economic mobility. In a city where race still predicts access and opportunity, our programming creates protected spaces where Black participants can show up fully—without code-switching, without diminishment, and without fear. By embedding leadership development, cultural pride, and emotional wellness into every experience, we aim to interrupt cycles of disengagement and replace them with pathways toward confidence, agency, and purpose.
Over the next five years, our vision is to see measurable, generational impact through sustained relationships and community-rooted leadership. We seek to grow a pipeline of Black youth and young adults who are not only supported but equipped to lead—middle school boys who build positive peer networks and strong mentorship bonds, young Black women who emerge with clarity, confidence, and community power, and young men who find purpose, discipline, and visibility. Emerging Excellence is not simply a programmatic offering; it is a movement toward wholeness, where Black individuals are seen, supported, and resourced to thrive—and where they, in turn, pour back into their families, neighborhoods, and the next generation.
The creation of this institute was envisioned in Justified Anger’s “Our Madison Plan,” a comprehensive call to community action created by Madison’s African American community and organized to coordinate community-wide efforts to narrow racial disparities by taking advantage of the rich Black community-based leadership potential.
We need to provide supportive and encouraging environments where African American students can thrive.
