Get The Inside Info!

“In The Mix with Nehemiah” is your monthly source for staying connected to the culture of Nehemiah and Justified Anger.
Get the inside scoop on what our staff, friends, and allies are into each month to help get a better perspective on issues of race, leadership, transformation, justice, and community. We hope that these recommendations help us build a #StrongerMadisonForAll. Don’t miss it!

Read This!
Tyler Nylen, Special Assistant to Dr. Alex Gee and Black Like Me Podcast Producer, recommends reading the book, “Between the World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates. The book draws upon James Baldwin’s “The Fire Next Time,” particularly in style. In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current crisis.

Listen to This!
Eli Steenlage, Director of Communications and Black Like Me Podcast Producer, recommends listening to the 1619 Project Podcast from the New York Times.
If you are following Dr. Gee’s “Year of Return” trip to Ghana for the 400th Anniversary of the first African slave arriving in America or simply want to learn the unheard history of America, this is an insightful listen. Justified Anger’s Black History for a New Day course is a great place to wrestle with this history.

Watch This!
Lindsey Johnson, Director of External Relationships, recommends the Amazon Prime documentary series, Free Meek.
A re-investigation of Meek Mills original case explores allegations of police corruption as Meek becomes the face of a justice reform movement. Much of the series focuses on Meek Mills probation period. Watch for a glimpse inside the life of men after prison who navigate the criminal justice system. Nehemiah’s Reentry Services assists men through this challenging process.

Don Thornton, Executive Assistant to Dr. Alex Gee, recommends the Step Up: Equity Matters workshop about collaborating for equity in the workplace. The workshop offers an understanding of how biases shape our views of the people around us and how these biases impact our daily workplace interactions with co-workers, customers, partners, and stakeholders. Participants will learn to understand, identify and reframe biases to move beyond negative emotions such as guilt, embarrassment, powerlessness and toward positive intention and action.
